Video conferencing

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

It’s been a long time coming, but in the final stretch, video conferences sprinted to the finish line… almost. When they first came out, they were expensive, cumbersome, choppy, and hard to find. And now our top-of-the-line video conferencing systems have come far, but they are still expensive and cumbersome. Be expectant, the future is just around the corner.

Two way virtual meeting
In 2008, you can pop up a little video window on your computer using a free chat/instant messaging window – having first bought a thirty dollar webcam, of course. It’s small and choppy, but free and easy. You could also spend around a hundred dollars and get a nice webcam and use a video conferencing service. This is a good option for clear, smooth video conferencing. It’s a far cry from a floor to ceiling screen with resolution so good you can count freckles, but unless you have half a million dollars, it’s as close as you’re going to get.

Conferencing technology
Despite having said that, we’ve come a long way in just five years. Small and choppy video was all you could really get back then, and now we can get decent quality and sound, inexpensively and easily. Imagine what it will be like in five more years.
Even so, to get there, we have to extensively use what we have now to justify progressing the medium. Like a mom telling us to finish our greens before we can get dessert, to get insanely good video conferencing for everyone, we have to show that there is a demand, a need to encourage developers to make things better and cheaper.

Uses and tools
The good news is that collectively, we are already doing this. Hospitals are a prime example of cutting edge video conferencing being put to use. Doctors in hospitals across the country or world can discuss a particular diagnosis instantly via a video conference. In some hospitals, screens attached to motorized bases roll around the halls of medicine controlled by doctors in their offices or homes. They follow-up with their patients, look for complications, discuss further treatments, etc. and roll to the next room.

More importantly, video conferences allowed for real-time collaboration of all commanders in one session. Splice in real-time video from the front, and a clearer picture of what to do is formed.

Ten Reasons to Market to the Online Generation Using Surveys and Questionnaires

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Customers are tough cookies. They’re extremely media aware and increasingly cynical – it’s a clever marketeer who can get through to them. Online surveys reinvent the traditional format – bringing all the benefits of the Internet without the programming. Here are ten reasons why they may be the silver bullet marketeers’ need, complete with examples supplied by Martin Day, managing director of online survey website Survey Galaxy – one of a new breed of websites making online surveys quicker and cheaper

1. It’s cheap, it’s cheerful
Select the right survey website and creating surveys can be free of any charge and the cost to publish excellent value for money.
Useful information derived from survey analysis can be reused and repackaged in other marketing and PR for use in press outlets making it a very efficient form of information gathering.

2. It’s easy peasy
Anyone can create and publish an online survey. Online surveys are quick and simple to create and design, no programming skills are required and when publishing completing the surveys is straight forward.

3. Deployment options
Once the survey is online it is a simple step to promote it the most popular methods being either through email (with a link enclosed) or via a link from a website. Once advised of the survey’s URL anyone can link can to the survey at a time that is convenient to them, 24×7.

4. We’ve all got an opinion – and we like to give it
Customers like surveys – they’re not seen as spam, but as an empowering opportunity to make their voice heard and a chance to have an impact on a brand. They can be particularly good for broaching sensitive subjects with concerned employees; a survey asking a workforce on their opinion of change allows the key issues to be raised in a positive manner and encourages employee participation. Deliver a message to individuals and then have the feedback collated in a manageable form.

5. Get inside their heads
With traditional advertising you can lead a customer to an advertisement but you can’t make them think. Surveys actively engage the respondent, who think about the question before giving their response.

6. Building relationships
It needn’t all end at the end of the survey – while you have the respondent’s attention and they are in the mood you can ask if they want to sign up for more information or a regular newsletter – making the most of the window of opportunity where you have their interest.

7. If you like this, you’ll love…
Take the opportunity to maximise the interest of those responding to your survey by referencing related information. By including links within the survey you are able to reinforce the marketing message.

8. Subtly does it
Use surveys to associate a product with its positive attributes. By listing the many features of a product and then asking the respondent to say how important the features are to them, regardless of their response, the respondent will associate the product with the features.

9. It’s not just about selling
A survey is an effective, quick and easy method to help promote and gain acceptance for a difficult proposal; such as a public body trying to gain acceptance and support for a particular scheme.
Take the example of a city trying to gain support from the general public for their bid to host a future Olympic Games. With a survey you have the opportunity to explain each benefit putting the respondent in a much better frame of mind to appreciate an argument and be more positive in their response. Your primary goal may be to promote a cause but you will automatically receive useful feedback that can then be used to fine tune the overall marketing strategy.

10. Engage your target group
By thinking laterally a lively and imaginative approach to surveys could provide a ‘hook’ to engage respondents. The survey subject can be focused towards a particular group on a subject close to theirs hearts. The survey’s marketing message can take the form of a simple brand awareness message by stating that ‘this survey was sponsored by brand name’, or by finding a link from the subject matter to the product – something that is surprisingly easy and highly effective.

Attract more people to your website by providing a Public Survey section as many people who enjoy completing crosswords and doing word puzzles enjoy completing surveys. Low cost and automated, having a public survey notice board as part of a website will help increase traffic and establish a loyal and returning following. No need for moderators as unlike discussion boards there is no opportunity for people to disrupt the site by inappropriate remarks as the survey results can be displayed in summary form.

Customers do not associate surveys as spam and most welcome the opportunity to make their voice heard and a chance to have an impact on a brand.

Many of the techniques and a few more are contained in the following sample survey created using Survey Galaxy’s survey software tool.

Cheap Private Health Insurance Vendors in Germany

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Are you looking for a cheap private health insurance (PKV) in Germany? Use the free PKV comparison, and find the right private medical insurance offer from the plurality of insurance companies. On the market there are many PKV insurance vendors. Here you can find a free comparison of insurance companies and get your personal sickness insurance quote: Private Krankenvollversicherungen im Angebotsvergleich

A private sickness insurance has different advantages:

You can save charges, if you agree to pay a fixed amount of the yearly medical bills by yourself. This is interesting for healthy people who do not need regular medication. Private patients see the doctors checks and know how much is billed. So you can see how much the different items are. As a private insured, you can control the medical invoices. Before choosing your German private sickness insurance vendor, you should always ask for several offers. That can be done online: Privatkassen fuer Angestellte. Every German, who is not obliged to be a member of the statutory health insurance (GKV), can join the private health insurance. This applies to civil servants and self-employed persons. In addition to employees, whose salaries are above the GKV insurance limit. The insurance limit is a monthly gross salary of 4012.50 Euros or 48,150 Euros per year in 2008.

Many companies offer the option of making adjustments to the tariff of the active contract. That is very helpful when your personal needs change over time. The PKV usually offers better performance than the statutory health insurance. Private health insurance companies may also pay items, which are not paid by the statutory health insurance. This is dependent on your individual contract. The monthly charges of the private health insurance are only dependent on the individual contract and are not calculated in accordance to your income.

Roots, Rock ‘n Blues – American Roots Music

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I fell in love with American roots music while I was in college in the late 1960s. The irony of that is that I was born and grew up in the Washington, DC area and had to move to Minnesota to hear the blues for the first time!

I should say that it was in college that I first heard the blues played by the original artists. I’d been a big fan of the Rolling Stones and numerous other British Invasion groups who were all playing their versions of the blues, or derivatives thereof. I just had no idea at the time that they’d been so heavily influenced by a whole generation of musicians that I’d never heard of.

In the meantime, there were American musicians playing blues and blues-influenced rock to small, but devoted audiences. Three of my favorites (discovered for the most part years later) were Lonnie Mack, Albert Collins and Roy Buchanan. Lonnie Mack is best known for his radio hits, but is a killer blues player as I discovered much to my surprise when Alligator Records put out a video of a concert with Lonnie, Albert and Roy at Carnegie Hall in New York City from the early 1990s. The concert was called “Further On Down The Road” and was a real eye-opener for me when I first saw it. It’s still one of my favorite videos.

With the explosion of videos on the Internet, there is a wealth of blues video footage from the 1950s through today. It’s a blessing that so much still survives from the early days. Watching some of these legends perform helps make it clear just why they are legendary.
