Ways to Treat Bedbugs

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

There are so many ways for getting rid of bed bugs. The most convenient for you will be by contacting an exterminator to deal with the infestation. But there are many do-it-yourself ways that you can choose from: steam cleaning, extreme heat, insecticides, diatomaceous soil, and mattress cover.

Steam cleaning is an effective bedbug treatment. The only problem is that not all surfaces can be steam cleaned. Check first if the surface that you are about to clean can withstand this method.

Exposing the infested mattress, linens, or furniture under the sun for hours can do the trick. But first, scrub and vacuum each surface. When discarding the vacuum bag, put this inside a plastic bag to stop transfer of the bedbugs. Before bringing the exposed material inside your house, check for bedbugs again.

Bedbug insecticides come in sprays or in dust forms. Choose which one is suited for you. It is important for you to carefully read and understand the product label and the instructions. Observe utmost care in applying the insecticide.

Another method of bedbug treatment is the use of diatomaceous soil. This contains fossils of single-celled algae which has jagged edges. The edges can kill bedbugs that come into contact with the soil. Leave the soil for a few days in areas that you are sure to have bedbugs passing by. Never worry because the particles in the soil are too small to cause any harm on you. After a few days, vacuum the soil off and dispose of the vacuum bag properly.

If it is just your mattress that is infested with bedbugs, you can buy a vinyl or fabric mattress cover. This type of mattress cover has zippers along the sides. This seals the mattress inside making sure that no bedbugs will come in and out of the mattress. The bedbugs will not be able to bite you. Without food in at least 6 months, the bedbugs will eventually die.

How To Choose A Tie

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

It is an art to match the tie correctly with the rest of the clothes and the occasion. So how do you perfect the tricks of it? Simply remember these few guidelines.

Always buy the tie of correct length. Standard tie lengths are 130-150cm. Tall men should request for longer ties. An appropriate tie length is when the triangle tip of the tie touches your belt buckle.

Unless you can afford to buy tie widths in fashion, buy a width of 8-9cm which is a general width and will never get out of fashion.

While purchasing mens silk ties to go with a suit, ensure that you carry the suit with you. You will then have a perfect idea of how the tie will look when worn. If the jacket is a sports coat then the color of the trousers must also be taken into consideration while selecting the tie.

Before buying, carefully check the tie for any manufacturing defect like loose threads, uneven weaving, stain, discoloration, smudge, etc.

Casual, regular office ties can be polyester blends, but business meetings and other occasions require italian silk ties or silk blend ties.

For all occasions, avoid ties with pictures and cartoons. These patterns are very informal and should be worn only to similarly informal occasions, like a birthday party or a family gathering.

A safe bet are solid colored, striped or dotted ties. Match them with the shirt or the suit and wear.

For job interview, business meeting, regular office and other serious occasions the selection of tie should be conservative. Set off a dark colored shirt or suit with a light toned tie in the same or complementing hue.  Do not wear a striped tie with a striped shirt, with the exception of a pin-striped shirt. A solid tie will be a better option.

Match patterns and textures of the clothing with the tie. With patterned shirts, its better to wear solid ties and vice versa. It will be a loud clash if you wear patterned tie with patterned shirt. This clash can be sobered by wearing a plain jacket with them.

A dark shirt is relieved by lighter colored tie and a bright shirt can be sobered by pairing it with a dark tie. Dark blue and dark red colors seldom go wrong in ties. You can also select a tie of the same color as your shirt or suit, but in a lighter or darker shade.

Are you aware that your face and skin also should affect your tie selection?

If you have a strong, angular face you should wear striped ties. Dotted and paisley printed ties go well with a round or baby face. Solid colors can be worn by everyone.

As you would match the shirt and suit to your skin before buying, so should you follow the same principles while selecting a tie.

So you can see that the choice of the tie depends on the occasion, the pattern of the shirt and jacket, and the color of the shirt and jacket.

Scat Mats — the greatest training aid

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Scat Mats are a touch sensitive training pad which say “No”, when you can’t.

It quickly teaches pets to avoid prohibited areas with harmless, low-power electronic pulses similar to static electricity. Place the flexible vinyl Scat Mat in a room entrance, on your sofa, counter top or the hood of your car. The touch sensitive pad will silently protect prohibited areas from trespassers.

When touched, the battery sends small pulses to the mat for 3 seconds. These surprising little ‘zaps’ quickly repel most animals who usually stay away after one or two exposures – even after the mat is removed.

Place it under objects that you don’t want touched, in front of doorways, on furniture, around Christmas trees or trash cans, on top of car hoods — anywhere that you want to discourage your pets or someone else’s pets from touching.

Scat Mat Features:

* Scat mats are powered by battery, so they can be used anywhere. (Most use one 9 volt alkaline battery – not included)

* The best mats have adjustable power settings: appropriate deterrence sensations for varying sized pets. You can train kittens at Low; cats at Medium; adult dogs and long haired cats on High.

* The training Indicator light blinks to tell you how many times the scat mat has been contacted since it was last turned on. No blinks means your pet is avoiding contact. With just a short training, the pet will be discouraged from getting near the forbidden object out of habit.

* Up to 6 extension mats can be connected to the powered scat mat to economically increase the number and/or size of the areas you wish to cover.

* Each mat (not extension mat) has an outlet to accept an optional adapter (sold separately) to convert to A/C current.

* You can put whole rooms off limits, keep your pets in a confined area, or keep your pets off of one piece (or several pieces) of furniture.

For larger pets who might jump across the original scat mat, see the new Pawz Away scat mat. It will make you, and your pet, a believer!

Dealing with Garden Pests

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

While tending to my own garden, I have found that one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a gardener is to walk outside to check on your plants. It is just a routine walk to make sure that your garden is thriving, but you end up finding holes in all of your plants that looked fine only hours before. The explanations for some of these plant-destroying holes are garden pests. Some of the main garden pests are slugs, worms, caterpillars, birds, snails, and the occasional gopher. Although you can never wipe out these pests entirely, after all your hard work in the garden you have to do something.

Insects are one of the worst things to have in your garden; they can live under the soil, in old weeds or piles of leaves, or in a number of other places. In order to help keep insects away, always try and eliminate places in your garden and near your garden that these insects and other plant diseases could be living. Remove old leaves, weeds, or any other decaying matter that insects and diseases could be living in from your yard. Also, regularly turn over your garden soil and break apart any clumps of dirt so that you can eliminate the living spaces any insects that might be hiding underground.

Another way to rid your garden of the pests is to use dormant spray, which is used to keep destructive insects and diseases under control. It is best that you use dormant spray when your plants are dormant, usually around February or early March. I have used dormant spray many times on my garden and it has worked wonders on keeping insects out. But as I learned from experience, dormant spray is only effective if you follow the correct instructions. When I first decided to use some on my garden, I just dumped it everywhere in hopes of killing everything harmful. Unfortunately I ended up killing my entire garden along with my neighbors. Some insects can be beneficial to your garden though, so be sure to find out which insects help your garden.

Another pest problem I have had besides insects has been birds. Whenever I see birds in my garden I run outside a chase them away, but as soon as I step inside they come right back. The solution that I have come up with to keep the birds away from my garden is to put a bird feeder in my yard. Instead of costing me time and money by eating my garden, the birds eat at the bird feeder. In the long run it will save you money. Not only can a bird feeder help keep birds away from your vegetable garden, but they can also be a new part of your yard decoration. Although not completely eliminating my bird problem, my bird feeder has made the problem smaller. Getting a dog has also helped.

If you start seeing mounds of dirt around your yard, and your plants keep unexplainably dieing, you can assume that you have a gopher problem. Thankfully, this is one of the few garden pests that I have not had. However my friend has struggled with a tremendous gopher infestation, so I decided to research it. Gophers are rodents that are five to fourteen inches long. Their fur can be black, light brown, or white, and they have small tails. One method of getting rid of these root-eating pests is to set traps. The key to successfully capturing a gopher using a trap is to successfully locate the gophers tunnels and set the trap correctly. Another way to get rid of them is to use smoke bombs, which you place into the tunnel and the smoke spreads through out it and hopefully reaches the gopher.

If you suspect that your gardens are being pillaged by any of the pests I mentioned, I encourage you to try your hardest to eliminate the problem as soon as possible. The longer you let the species stay, the more established it will become.
